 Cette construction militaire, qui date de 1544 (XVIe s.), fut édifiée sous le règne de l'empereur Charles-Quint pour compléter la Citadelle. Il a forme d’étoile à cinq branches, aux arêtes angulaires prononcées pour esquiver les projectiles de l’ennemi. Ses dimensions sont impressionnantes et ses murs ont une épaisseur de plus de deux mètres. Il disposait de trois terrasses où dresser les batteries de canons, obus ou mortiers à des hauteurs différentes pour défendre le port et la côte. Sa garnison se composait au maximum de deux cents hommes. Tout l’ensemble représente un exemple extraordinaire d’une forteresse d’artillerie côtière.
